As for being an "average" artist, the collector market would strongly disagree - many of his covers now sell for well over $100, but I am sure with your firm grip on the industry you're well aware of that. Of course the collectors probably have no sense of taste, like a Picasso or Monet they have once again selected incorrectly, choosing investment over quality.
Or perhaps people buy what they like, creating demand that drives prices up due to supply.
