Moore wishes he would be named on par with Lovecraft but he is a hack. He made himself famous rebooting historic characters.
Ehhh. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Moore is a hack. Watchmen was very well done. Sure, he revived 1940's period heroes, but he breathed new life into them in a way that was much more satisfying and sensible than the monkeyminded retconning we see today i.e.: making White characters Black.
His dialogue in the first two series is a little cheesy and at times you can see that his grasp of American colloquialisms is not up to date. However, I just started the much longer Providence series and through the characters, you can see that Moore is a really bright guy and extremely well-read.
