The author is a biased hack when it comes to Marv Heeymeyer, but he’s spot on when talking about this topic. Most people in Grand County who don’t work for a government agency are self employed or contractors, so unemployment numbers provided by labor dept are way off. The big problem is that we have a lot of weirdos and druggies who move up here and they are terrible workers, it’s been difficult to hire decent people for decades.
When you find a good worker, you have to baby them and pay high wages to keep them. It’s easier to do everything yourself than to hire a loser who puts your reputation at risk and will probably steal from you IF he actually shows up to work. I wish this author would have mentioned that another of our economic problems is really a demographic problem.
