Last year, Colorado lawmakers passed a new law requiring schools bring in Black history and cultural studies into their curriculum. One Denver school has been at the forefront of that education for decades now.
In East High School's AP African American studies class, tough topics are tackled. Paul Markson keeps his students engaged in this and all his classes.
"When I was teaching just the regular African American history honors, I had six full classes of it," said Markson.
Markson said there's interest in these classes but not always awareness.
"As African American studies, ethnic studies, it seems like students are coming in with less and less knowledge of things, so it's a bit more challenging where we seem to be moving away from more of the content," Markson said.
A new state law aims to expand education of Black history into all Colorado classrooms. Last year, Colorado lawmakers passed HB25-1149, requiring K-12 public schools to integrate Black history and cultural studies into their curriculum and create a free, bilingual resource bank for educators.
