I’m sorry to hear that. Avalanche danger is real, I’m glad this guy had the equipment to call for help. Lots of backcountry skiers don’t carry beacons or balloon packs because of the expense. This area is famous for its backcountry skiing, and yet what makes it a good place to recreate are the things that make it prone to avalanches.

I suppose I should get one of those ahead of my upcoming trip. I've traveled that pass with family who are local to the area numerous times. Its looking like I'll be traveling alone this year though, so all the more reason to get an emergency beacon..
