You are correct. In theory, ranked choice allows you to vote for your preferred candidate and not waste for vote if that candidate is 3rd party.

In practice, the Democrats run 1 Democrat candidate and 9 Democrats who changed their party affiliation to 'independent' 5 minutes before filing their campaign. It's like ABInbev stocking the shelves with 10 brands of beer that are all Bud Lite on the inside.
