Coyotes, although much smaller than wolves, will kill and eat calves as well. Many years ago, as a young man, I worked part time on a ranch for a city guy who bought some land and got a bunch of cattle for a tax write off or something. He wouldn't let me shoot coyotes because "they didn't hurt anything." One morning we were driving around checking on his cattle when we came over a hill and right in front of us was a coyote in the process of killing a new born calf. After that, the season was open on coyotes and he insisted that I always had my rifle handy. At night you could hear multiple packs of coyotes howling and yelping in all directions. It didn't take many coyotes to make a hell of a racket!
