I remember going to enormous church conventions tailored to entertain young children, and at some point at the end of the day before the event closed for the day, pamphletes were handed out to everyone (who were mostly kids and young adults) asking if anyone would like to pay alot of money to go be a missionary out of the country, or if anyone would like to sign up to donate to the needy in Africa, or if anyone would like to tithe or donate money to the orgonization, it goes on and on.

I remember my mom got hooked on one of those scams, and she would donate 5 or 20 bucks a month (despite the fact we were poor as fuck) to a toddler in Africa who would send us pictures of herself, write us letters, and make art for us. If we went through the right channels, we could be approved to come visit the girl, supposedly. The whole thing rubbed me the wrong way and seemed very impersonal. Best case scenario they were forcing a bunch of african kids to make "art" in bulk to send to the people they were scamming for money. We never learned much about the girl.
Actually, the longer I think about the implications of the program, the worse it gets.
