This is insane, but we live in insane times. They could have simply stopped picking up her trash, sent her to collections, started billing her interest and so on. I don't understand why the city won't allow someone else to pay her debt, unless this is just plain tyranny. Of course, the officials knew this would end up on social media.

Debtors prisons are illegal. I keep telling people that the gov'ts are corrupt from top to bottom and many of the local gov'ts are among the worst. They feel they have the right to do anything at all they wants and covid really brought out the petty tyrants in them.

Came to say this. That magistrate has a lot to answer for.

There often isn't. People get locked up for relatively petty offenses, at a cost of 25-50k per year to house them, easily 5-10 times the value of the financial loss to the person or business they stole from.
