No one is building a union with their community they're building a union with TV movies and shows and ads and THAT's what allows no one to notice that your neighbor's son keep slinking off behind his home to smoke weed, too busy watching Game of Thrones or some other shit
100% agree. It's a chicken/egg paradigm, but really is both. If society and community were strong, would you feel pressure to go spend time with them rather than sit in front of ____________ for hours at a time every night? Would your neighbors notice you missing, and work to get you back out and amongst the community?
To pull on that thread a bit, that's the other thing I bleat about incessantly. We work insane hours to support a lifestyle filled with shit we don't need. We sacrifice time with family and friends, with our community for a corporate god so we can buy more shit pushed on us in those ads you were talking about.
Random anecdote, but I lived for a while in southern california. Upon landing, i immediately noticed how few high school kids were working the jobs i'd worked as a kid in a flyover state. Instead, they were all mexicans. My first thought was that the spoiled kids of socal must be above working fast food or grocery stores....but then i realized there would be no way i'd want a high school aged daughter working there with them.
I say that to point out the impact that the immigration has on how we operate; kids no longer mow lawns because the mexicans do it. instead, they play video games and smoke pot. (massive generalization, but it holds some level of truth). That conditions us to not be part of the society, to rely on digital babysitting, and to explore and accept "do what feels good"
It all plays in together; there's no one silver bullet cause for the shit pile we find ourselves today.
