According to the study, genetic sequence analysis suggests the HIV variant first emerged in the 1990s

What they are saying is that this variant is a genetic descendant of a HIV variant that was last seen in the wild in the 1990s and not a descendant of more recent HIV strains...

Hum... This is exactly the story around the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Most closely related to a Covid variant last seen in the wild in March of 2020.

This is COULD be evidence that the HIV variant has been in the wild since the 1990s and we never knew about it. This could ALSO indicate that the variant was sampled from the wild in the 1990 and was grown/mutated in the lab and then somehow escaped the lab or was released from the lab
