Yams originated in Africa, Sweet Potatoes originated in South America. It is these South American Sweet Potatoes (called Kumara) which were found spread all across Polynesia (also called kumara!) which was aq main evidence in explaining the people of the islands. Thor Hyerdahl did his KON TIKI raft trip to prove it possible.
