Everyone knows what the seven deadly sins are. They are:

  1. Pride
  2. Greed
  3. Lust
  4. Envy
  5. Gluttony
  6. Wrath
  7. Sloth

Of these seven sins, only one has come in our own time to be regarded as a virtue. Pride. People are told to take pride in their work, pride in their children, pride in their appearance, pride in their race, pride in their history, pride in their heritage.

But should we be taking pride in anything, if pride is one of the seven traditional "deadly" sins? Maybe our modern understanding of pride is warped in some way. Pride is arguably the worst of the sins, since it is ranked at the top of the traditional ordering of the sins. Have you ever considered why it is the only sin that has been turned into a virtue in our own time?

There used to be a saying -- "Pride goeth before a fall." In primitive nations, parents refuse to take pride in their children for fear that ill fortune will strike the children dead. This is a very common attitude outside the Western world. In the Third World, pride is still a sin.

I've always considered it a word that has evolved in modern meaning. I think (with literally no justification - just my thought, so take it for what it's worth) that pride used to be comparable to gluttony in it's old meaning. In other words, you were a glutton for praise.

I think it has come to mean that you are invested in your work/children/etc. You place value in them.

Of course, if that value becomes out of proportion, then it becomes the other pride.

Just my thinking.

In the same way that the Commandment isn't really 'thou shalt not kill' - it's really 'thou shalt not do murder' in its historical context.
