I regularly read from New Living Translation, but for study I prefer the Septuagint and a KJV.

The Septuagint is easily 800 years older than the Masoretic text. I think the KJV is great for the NT for for the OT there are some pretty stark differences.

I do agree with you actually, about avoiding pork and other unclean meat, a couple books I read years ago helped me understand, some foods are not at all good for you.

Science can confirm scripture, but it is not needed to prove scripture. Romans also addresses those without the torah doing it by instinct because it makes sense, which confirms the torah saying that the nations would look at the wisdom of the torah and want to follow it because it made sense.
