I regularly read from New Living Translation, but for study I prefer the Septuagint and a KJV.

The Septuagint is easily 800 years older than the Masoretic text. I think the KJV is great for the NT for for the OT there are some pretty stark differences.

I've got the new covenant sealed on my heart, but some people really still care about the words in old manipulated books...

Most Christians regard the words in the Bible as the words of God, not the words of men. Of course they were transmitted through men -- how else could they get into the book? But that does not necessarily mean that God was not the author.

If the Spirit indwells you yes the new covenant is in your heart but we still need the Word of God for instruction and edification, "sanctify them by the truth, thy word is truth" etc.
