What modern people probably don't realize is that the ability to read was unusual until the 18th century. Even if the Bible had been translated from Latin to European languages, most Europeans would not have been able to read it. Only when reading became common did the Bible in the native languages of the various nations become significant. People no longer needed the priests to tell them what the Bible said, they could read it for themselves.
