I understand the importance of easter in terms of jesus, and even there i've heard conflicting ideas in that jesus was not resurrected on easter, or that he was, or that his friend died on the cross. however, how did the easter bunny and the eggs come into play?

Cholesterol was a problem in Jesus' time.

Part of His teachings was better living through better diet.

After the crucifixion, the apostles immediately went back to their old habits.

When news spread about the resurrection, Peter ran through town yelling:

"Jesus has returned! Hide the eggs!"
