31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. (Romans 3:31 KJV)

Paul had just been proving to the Jews, that the Law was not able to bring them into being justified before God, as the Jews had thought they could live by the law and earn their own righteousness. They were keeping the law, in the letter of the law, by their actions, but their hearts were far from God (Matthew 15:8), and God was not pleased with them. You can not become righteous by the keeping of the law (Romans 3:20), but must receive your righteousness by having faith in the gift of grace from God (Ephesians 2:8).

The law was never given for earning righteousness with God, but to show us that we humans are just incapable of being able to be righteous enough to come before Holy God. The law was to show us God’s standard and make us realize that we needed a Savior to be able to come back into fellowship with Holy God. Our righteousness is as filthy rags according to scripture (Isaiah 64:6), and we had to be born again with the Holy Righteousness of Jesus, before we could hope to become acceptable to God, and be able to again have fellowship with Him (John 17:3). Thank you Jesus for all you have done for us humans.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Matthew 23 KJV
