Daily Devotional

December 23

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke 2:7 (KJV)

The Christmas Story continues. Those that have said that Joseph and Mary were poor, was the reason that they were in a stall, are not paying attention to what this verse says. It plainly states that they tried to get a room in the inn, but it was full. Joseph was a carpenter, and I am sure he could afford a room for his expectant wife. It really didn’t matter, as no manmade accommodation would have been good enough for our Lord (1 Kings 8:27), as He was God in the flesh (John 1:14).

The Greek word translated “manger” literally means “a crib for fodder” that was used to feed animals. It is so awesome that our Lord came into this world, in this manner, and is so fitting, as He said He was meek and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29). The whole story of the amazing pregnancy of Mary, and the birth in a manger, is what many refer to as the “Christmas Story”, but it was so much more than that. Jesus was the greatest gift that God has ever given to this world, and for this gift to arrive wrapped in swaddling clothes is truly amazing. Praise God for sending His Son to bring us back into relationship with the Father (John 17:3).
