15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. - 1 Peter 4:15-16 (KJV)
Peter is teaching that all suffering is not godly, as if you suffer persecution for any of these evil deeds, then you should be ashamed. No Christian should be sinning, but if you do, and get punished for it, then it is not something to be proud, or happy, about, as it was because of your sins that you suffered. All Christians will occasionally sin, as we all do (Romans 3:23), and come short of the glory of God, but when we do sin, and suffer for it, that suffering comes from the devil, and not from God. Jesus forgave us of our sins, past, present, and future ones, but when we sin we make the devil our master (Romans 6:16), and the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
On the other hand, if you suffer persecution for Christ’s sake, because you are a Christian, then you should not be ashamed, but glorify God that you suffer for Him. The suffering we do as a Christian, will be rewarded when Jesus comes again, and we are rewarded for our works (Matthew 16:27). Jesus will more then compensate us for any suffering we do for His Kingdom, and we can be sure that we will shine as the sun, when we have lived righteous for Christ (Matthew 13:43). All those, who have been born again, should try to live as righteous as we can, as the word Christian means “little Christ”, and therefore we need to act like Jesus, so that the world will recognize who we have in us (1 Peter 1:15). Praise God for Jesus.
