13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. - 1 John 5:13 (KJV)
John is writing these things to other believers that believe in Jesus as their Savior. He is assuring them that they have eternal life as believers, and eternal life is knowing the Father and Jesus in an intimate way (John 17:3) as that is what salvation is all about. The church has been bad to teach that Jesus came and died for us to keep us from going to hell. That is true, but as Jesus said, He came to give us eternal life (John 3:16), so we could know the Father, as God wanted to be able to again fellowship with His creation, us. If you believe that Jesus just came to save you from going to hell, then you missed the whole point of salvation. You need to enter into a close, personal, relationship with the Father, to have eternal life, and fulfill the purpose of salvation.
Jesus said that He came to give us life (fellowship with God), and give it to us more abundantly (John 10:10). The bible many times uses the word life, to mean relationship with God, as that is the only life worth living. If you are not experiencing the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) in your life, and if it is not full of love, joy, peace, prosperity, etc., then maybe you have missed out on life, as only God can give. If you have been born again, and keep your faith in Jesus as your righteousness, and don’t blasphemy the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31-32), and always obey Jesus (Hebrews 5:9), then you will be assured that your name will not be blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:5), and you will go to heaven. You must continue in your faith, and obedience, in Jesus to assure your salvation – praise God for Jesus.
