11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. - 1 John 2:11 (KJV)
The bible uses the term darkness to represent sin, or the devil who is the author of sin, and so it is saying that if you hate your brother, you are in sin, and you are of the devil (1 John 3:8). When you walk in the dark, or in sin, then you can not see where you are going, and are bound to stumble over something. The same is true if you are living in sin, as you will stumble and fall and the fall will be great. If you love your brother, you are walking in the light (1 John 2:10), and can see where you are going. If you are going to walk, it only makes sense to walk in the light, and if you are living in this world, it only makes sense to keep walking in the light so you will not stumble and fall. The bible uses the term light to represent God, or holiness, and we need to all try and always walk in the light and let it shine (Matthew 5:16).
When you are in sin (darkness), it will blind your eyes and you will not realize where you are going, but it will end up with you going to hell. If you do hate your brother, what should you do? You don’t try and quit hating your brother, so you will be in the light, but you go to God and repent, and get right with God, then you will be in the light, and you will find that you don’t hate your brother anymore. When you die to yourself, and let Jesus live through you, then you will be walking in the light, and you will be full of God, who is love (1 John 4:8), so you will be full of love, and your light will shine. Get full of God and let your light shine, so you will see your way to heaven.
