You ask the pastor, or whatever he's called at your church. Since he represents 'the church' it's the same as asking the church.

I'm more intrigued about how masturbation is a sin in the first place. I mean if it's a sin then that would apply if you're married, single, divorced, or widowed, wouldn't it? Or is this one of those "it depends" sins?

Considering the only point to it is self pleasure and that the thoughts that go with it are most certainly fornication; yes. Since this self pleasuring is a sin, find a woman to marry so that you are no longer tempted to fornicate. I pray you are able to overcome these temptations by the grace of God. I personally have dealt with this temptation and thank the Lord Jesus that I have been able to overcome it. It was not easy, but through prayer and fasting, it can be done. Many blessings brother.
