20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. - 2 Peter 2:20-21 (KJV)
This is telling us that to know Jesus, and be born again, and then to turn away from Him being your Lord, is worse then never having known Him. Paul wrote that for a mature Christian, that has experienced the love of God, and the benefits of having been born again, to then turn away from it, causes one to become reprobate, and they can never be saved again (Hebrews 6:4-6). Although you can not accidentally lose your salvation, you can reject it, or blasphemy the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31-32) or disobey Jesus (Hebrews 5:9), all of which will send you to hell, even if you are a born again Christian. See our “New Revelations” page on our web site for a recent example of this happening.
Peter is telling us that it would have been better to never have known Jesus, and His righteousness, than to have experienced them, and then turn away from it. You only have one chance at being born again, as there is no such thing as being born again, again. If you ever fall away from the Lord by becoming a reprobate, or blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, or disobeying Jesus, then you can never be saved again. It is so important to keep Jesus as your Lord, and not just your Savior, so your name will not ever be blotted out of the Book of Life in heaven (Revelations 3:5). All we have to do is believe in Jesus, make Him our Lord, and do what He has commanded us to do, to stay in the Book of Life. Let’s do it without compromise, and assure our salvation.
