8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. - Heb 10:8-9 (KJV)
Beginning in Hebrews 10:5, the author is quoting from the Old Testament scriptures (Psalms 40:6-8), which is quoting God as saying that He was not pleased with the animal sacrifices for sin anymore, as prescribed by the law given through Moses. God never intended for the animal sacrifices to really do anything but remind the people of their sins, and could never atone for them. It took a perfect lamb (Jesus) to make the sin atonement for us, and that was God’s plan from the beginning (1 Peter 1:19-20), and what a plan it was. God knew all along that He would send Jesus to die, and bring us back into fellowship with Him, before the world was ever created, and yet He did it anyway – what love that is, and shows that God is love (1 John 4:8).
This is Jesus saying that He came to do the will of God the Father, and by His sacrifice He did away with the animal sacrifices that God was no longer pleased with. So many Christians still try to live under the Old Testament mentality of doing works of the law to be right with God, but God is not pleased with doing works, but only by faith (Hebrews 11;6) in Jesus, who bore all our sins for us (1 Peter 2:24). It was all for the Father, that Jesus came and died for us, as the Father wanted to be able to fellowship with His people again (John 17:3). We need to be sure and have a close, personal, relationship with God, or we have missed the whole point of salvation (John 3:16). Praise God that He loves us so much – Thank you Jesus.
