3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. - 1 John 2:3-4 (KJV)

Most people who teach the bible, still teach the law of doing things to be right with God, or for God to bless us and answer our prayers, but that is not so. Jesus came to fulfill the law for us (Matthew 5:17), and did so, and now we are not justified by what we do, but by faith in Jesus (Romans 3:22). Most teach that this verse is saying that to know God, we must keep His commandments – No that is not what this verse is saying. It is saying that if you truly, intimately, know God, then you will keep His commandments. Jesus came and died (John 3:16) to bring us back into fellowship (John 17:3) with God the Father, in an intimately close relationship. This is the way that you know that you truly have that relationship, is whether you keep God’s commandments, as you will want to do so if you are truly born again.

The word “know” in these verses, are speaking of a personal relationship, not just knowledge about someone. If you say that you truly do know God, and yet do not try and keep His commandments, then you are a liar. It all comes down to the fact that if you are truly born again, you have your sin nature replaced by the very Spirit of Jesus (Galatians 4:6), and that will cause you to want to live a holy life, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). If you truly don’t want to live holy for Him, then you weren’t born again, and you don’t know God. Thank you Lord, that we can know we are born again, by our desire to follow your commands (Hebrews 5:9) out of love for you.
