Daily Devotional

October 11

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. - 2 Peter 1:19-20 (KJV)

Peter had been making it known that he was about to come to the end of his life (2 Peter 1:14), and had been relaying to the saints, all that he had witnessed when he was with Jesus for three and one-half years. Now Peter is saying that even though he had heard the audible voice of God (2 Peter 1:18), and saw Jesus transfigured on the mount, there was even a greater witness than that. Most people would say, what could be greater than hearing the voice of God, but what Peter is telling us, is that the written word of God is more sure than any verbal, physical or feeling, that we could ever have. Most humans want something physical to see, feel, hear, taste or touch, but Peter is telling us that the written scriptures are more sure than anything we could ever experience with our five senses.

We are so blessed to have the written scriptures in the bible, to study and learn the things of God. Also we have the Holy Ghost to help us understand the scriptures (John 14:26), and make them come alive to us as we read them. No one could teach us better than the Holy Spirit, as He is the one that inspired the prophets to write the books of the bible, so He is teaching us His words. Our understanding of the things of God, are so much better than any of the disciples that lived with Jesus could have. We have all their perspectives together, and the one that wrote the majority of the New Testament, was Paul, who did not walk with Jesus during His ministry. Praise God for the bible, and the Holy Spirit to teach it to us!
