10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. - 2 Cor 12:10 (KJV)
Paul had just been telling about how a messenger of the devil had been persecuting him, and that he had asked the Lord to get rid of it for him. This is where Paul called his persecution a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7), and it is not talking about a sickness like some have taught. The word infirmities can refer to sickness, but Paul has been using the word to refer to his persecutions, not sickness. The Lord had just told Paul that His grace was sufficient to see Paul through his persecutions (2 Corinthians 12:9), as His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Now Paul is saying that he now takes pleasure when he suffers for Christ’s sake, as when he is weak in himself, then he is strong in the Lord.
When we try to overcome our problems in our own strength, we will fail many times, but if we can die to ourselves, and let Christ live through us, we will operate in His strength, and that is enough to overcome any obstacle (1 John 4:4). This is what Jesus was telling us, when He said to cast our cares upon Him (Matthew 11:28-30), as His burden is light, and He will handle our cares and problems. It is a wonderful thing to know, that our Lord loves us so much, that He will accept our problems, and give us His strength to overcome them. What a wonderful Lord we have in Jesus!
