16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. - 2 Peter 1:16-17 (KJV)
Peter was writing to these saints, telling them the truths he had observed while walking with Jesus, as the truth would set them free if they would believe it (John 8:32). Peter is emphasizing the fact that these were not some made up stories about Jesus, but that he, and the others, had actually been eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus. Peter is giving a personal testimony as to the life he had observed, and the marvelous deeds that Jesus had done during His ministry.
This verse is recalling the time that Peter, James and John were with Jesus on the mount, and saw Him transfigured, and God spoke to them out of a cloud that overshadowed them (Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:7, Luke 9:34). What a tremendous thing it would have been, to have God speak to you out of a cloud. These eyewitness accounts of the Father honoring His Son, are witness to the fact that Jesus was God in the flesh (John 1:14), and the very Word of God (John 1:1). Even though it would have been wonderful to be present, and see and hear all these things, we are blessed to live in this age, as we now have the complete bible, along with the Holy Ghost living in us (John 14:16-17), to enable us to understand all that happened back then. God is so good to His children to provide us with so much information about Himself, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. That is why it is so important for us to get to know all that happened, so we can get close to the Father in relationship, as that is why Jesus came and died for us (John 17:3). Praise God for His Word.
