Daily Devotional

October 3

14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. - 1 Peter 1:14-16 (KJV)

The word that was translated “not fashioning yourselves” just means that you are not to live the same way that you did before you were saved. You were ignorant as to how God would have you live your life, before you were saved, but you now have the Holy Ghost to help direct your life (John 16:13). You are not automatically changed upon salvation, but you must give yourself to God, and renew your mind by reading the Word of God (Romans 12:1-2).

When you are born again, you get the Spirit of Jesus into your body (Ephesians 4:24), and it is what gives us our righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21), so if you walk after the Spirit, you will live a holy life. The word translated “manner of conversation”, literally means behavior, so it means we are to act holy in all our speech and actions.

This verse is apparently referring to Old Testament scripture in Leviticus (11:44 or 19:2 or 20:7), telling us that we should be holy as God is holy, and since we are now part of the body of Christ, we need to live holy. We should want to be as our Father is, as we are His sons now (John 1:12). If you are truly born again, you get your “want to” or desires changed, and your desire now should be to live holy, and to get into a close relationship with the Father (John 17:3), as any good son should want to do. Praise God for sending Jesus to bring us back into relationship with the Father!
