Daily Devotional

September 29

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? 30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. - 2 Cor 11:28-30 (KJV)

Paul had just been teaching on all the sufferings that he went through for the Gospel, and had just told of all the physical sufferings (2 Corinthians 11:23-27), and now was saying that he had the emotional sufferings of caring for all the churches. Paul suffered tremendously physically as told in the book of Acts and others, but he also suffered the care of all his people that he had led to the Lord. Paul could only handle all this strain, by giving it to the Lord (1 Peter 5:7), but it took a strong fortitude on his part to be able to accomplish what Jesus told him to do. Paul was not weak or offended, but he was strong through Jesus living in, and through, him.

Paul says that if he must glory, he will do so by his infirmities, and that is not referring to sickness or disease. Paul used the word infirmity to refer to his persecution and physical suffering, not any sickness. He had just listed his persecutions (2 Corinthians 11:23-27), and they were not sickness, but they were the sufferings he had come upon him by the persecution of one of the devils angels, which Paul referred to as a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). Paul was persecuted more then most of the apostles that we have record of, and he was able to finished his ministry that God gave him, and leave a written record that is a blessing to us today. Paul wrote more of the New Testament scriptures than anyone else, and he had a greater revelation of the grace of God than anyone else. Praise God that we still have the Word to read and study.
