I admit that I tend to oversimplify and treat it in a very black-and-white manner.

True - most of the commands are to forgive fellow believers ("just as God has forgiven you..."). We are also to love our enemies, bless and pray for those who hurt us.

Waiting for someone to ask for forgiveness - or even admit that there is a slight chance that they could possibly be wrong! - has just added to my resentment.
