My mom used to beat me over being left handed, threatened me with a gun and knives, would use isolation as a punishment. My brother turned into an alcoholic over it. How do you forgive this person, when so much hurt has been cause, so many lives destroyed?

That is irrelevant!

Disagree.

We were forgiven before we were even born, yet those who offend us need to ask?

Sure, it helps - it might even signify the end of the offending action(s). But the Word says if you do not forgive, you will not be forgiven.

I understand, but whenever people jump into 'forgiveness' they proceed without agreeing on what it is, so there are misunderstandings.

I'm really just saying that it's not totally 'irrelevant' in the discussion.

Also, the scripture is speaking mainly about a 'brother' and forgiveness.

Mainly.

People get confused when you see a mother standing before the courtroom saying things like "I forgive this murderer who killed my daughter."

One thing for sure, it's a tough question (at least to me).
