My mom used to beat me over being left handed, threatened me with a gun and knives, would use isolation as a punishment. My brother turned into an alcoholic over it. How do you forgive this person, when so much hurt has been cause, so many lives destroyed?

I understand, but whenever people jump into 'forgiveness' they proceed without agreeing on what it is, so there are misunderstandings.

I'm really just saying that it's not totally 'irrelevant' in the discussion.

Also, the scripture is speaking mainly about a 'brother' and forgiveness.

Mainly.

People get confused when you see a mother standing before the courtroom saying things like "I forgive this murderer who killed my daughter."

One thing for sure, it's a tough question (at least to me).

I admit that I tend to oversimplify and treat it in a very black-and-white manner.

True - most of the commands are to forgive fellow believers ("just as God has forgiven you..."). We are also to love our enemies, bless and pray for those who hurt us.

Waiting for someone to ask for forgiveness - or even admit that there is a slight chance that they could possibly be wrong! - has just added to my resentment.
