26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. - 1 Cor 14:26 (KJV)
It seems in all the early first century church services, that the members all participated in the service, and it was not just conducted by a pastor. The Greek translated “psalm” can mean a hymn or instrument tune, and all the members seemed to have their own music. The Greek word translated “doctrine” literally means a teaching, and probably refers to a word from the Lord, received through the gift of the spirit. The church Paul is writing to was very active in the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12), and Paul had to give them instruction on how to use the gifts to edify the whole church, and not cause mass confusion.
The Greek word translated “tongue” undoubtedly is referring to the speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10) (the heavenly prayer language), which most churches do not believe in anymore, but it was very active in the early churches and should still be today, as it is a powerful tool. Those that teach that the gifts of the Spirit passed away with the Apostles are not telling the truth, as they still are active today. The Holy Spirit will give Christians revelation of biblical truths many times, as we study the bible. The point that Paul was making to these people, was that the church service should always be conducted in an orderly manner, and not in confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). It would be wonderful if all church services could involved all the members like the early churches did, and some try to do so, and find it very beneficial to the members. Praise God that all born again Christians can operate in the gifts of the Spirit, if they have the Holy Spirit and acknowledge Him. Thank you Lord for the Gifts of the Spirit.
