5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: - Col 3:5 (KJV)
The Greek word translated “Mortify” in this verse, means to deaden or subdue, and literally is telling us to take control of our bodies and actions so that we will not do these things. The bible teaches us to give ourselves to the Lord as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1), and then to let Christ live through us, so that we will not sin. You can control your emotions, and not let your lusts for things drive what you do and how you act. If we would just love one another, as Jesus told us to (John 13:34), then we would not do anything to offend one another, and would live a life that is blameless. We all still sin (1 John 1:8), as we are still human, but we should try and live as holy as possible (1 Peter 1:15), as that will please God, and will make us an example to others, and will keep the devil at bay.
The fact that “covetousness is idolatry” will surprise many, as this generation is very much into lusting after the newest gadgets, like flat screen TV’s and I-phones, etc., and it just seems to be a normal thing among people now. If you realize that covetousness is idolatry, and that God hates that (Psalms 10:3), then you might want to change, if you are trying to serve the Lord. The bible tells us in many places, that we need to be content with what we have, and just praise God for all that we do have, as everything good comes down from above (James 1:17), from the Father of lights, so be grateful for everything you have. Praise God for His goodness and many blessings.
