Daily Devotional

August 12

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. - John 17:17-19 (KJV)

The word “sanctify” means to set apart for Christ in this instance, as Jesus is asking the Father to set His disciples apart for His use in the Kingdom. We are set apart and cleansed by the Word of God (Psalms 119:9), and we do that by putting the Word into our hearts (Psalms 119:11). We are cleansed by the truth of God’s Word (2 Peter 1:3-4), and His Word is truth.

We, who are born again, are sent into the world to tell it of the Gospel (Good News) of salvation (Matthew 28:19-20), and to teach all things that Jesus has done for us, and told us to teach others. This is not just for those that are called to be Pastors, but is for all born again believers, so let’s all share the Gospel to everyone we can.

Jesus was totally set apart (sanctified) for the work of God, and He also wants us to be set apart for the Gospel. Our modern society has a hard time being set apart for anything, as it seems that everyone is going, and doing, at breakneck speed all the time, and we don’t ever slow down and apply ourselves to what is really important. The cares of this world, and business, are a favorite tool of the devil to take our eyes off of God (Mark 4:19). We need to take heed of the things of God, and stop, and know God (Psalms 46:10). Thank you Lord for your Words of truth.
