8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. - John 16:8-11 (KJV)
This is talking about the Holy Spirit that Jesus has just said that He would send to earth, to live in us who are born again (John 16:7). The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter, and is sent to bring us comfort and minister to us. The Holy Spirit is blamed for nailing us every time we sin, and making us feel guilty, but that is not what He does.
The Holy Spirit will point out our sins to us, but instead of condemning us for sinning (Romans 8:1), He will just point out that we are not trusting in Jesus, or we would not be committing those sins. He doesn’t condemn us, but calls our sins to our attention, so we will be aware of them.
The Holy Spirit will point out that even though we sinned, we are still righteous in the sight of the Father. He points out our “righteousness” – not our “unrighteousness”. Our born again Spirit remains righteous even when we sin (Ephesians 1:13), and God is a spirit (John 4:24), so we remain righteous in the sight of our Father.
The Holy Spirit points out that the devil has been judged and stripped of power, not that we are judged. Many people don’t understand the positive ministry of the Holy Spirit, and believe that He is the one that condemns us, but that is not what He does. He also gives us commands that we are required to follow, and if we rebel against His leading, it is blasphemy against the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31-32) and can cause a born again Christian to go to hell (see the “New Revelations” page on our web site). Praise God for sending the Holy Spirit to live in those of us who are born again.
