Daily Devotional

August 9

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. - Romans 12:17-18 (KJV)

Not responding to evil with evil is said throughout the bible, and Jesus said it also (Matthew 5:39-44). Peter said this same thing also (1 Peter 3:9), and Paul said it again (1 Thessalonians 5:15). Jesus gave us the supreme example of forgiving those who treat you evil at His crucifixion, when He forgave them that were crucifying Him (Luke 23:34). Us humans always tend to treat people like they treat us, but we need to walk after the Spirit, and let the love of God show through us, by responding to evil with goodness. We should not even let the appearance of evil be in us (1 Thessalonians 5:22).

We live in a hostile world, with the devil active in our lives, so we may find that we can not live at peace with some people, but we should try to at all times. We can be at peace, even with those that are not at peace with us, as that is their choice. We can control our own emotions, and if we will die to ourselves, and let Christ live through us, the peace that we, who are born again, have in our fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), will shine in us. Peace is a choice that each one of us must make for ourselves, as it is really not what happens to you that causes strife, but it is the way you respond to what happens. Demonstrate the peace of God in your life and actions, and you will live in peace no matter what happens to you. Praise God for the fruit of the Spirit.

This is hard sometimes. What about the Crusades? Did those Christians who went to fight the Muslims not follow this rule?

How do we know when it's okay to fight back with force?

Thanks for the comment. It is all in following the Lord and the peace in your heart. Not fighting back is not meant to say we don't fight wars, as God has lead Christians to war many times. It just means that we do not respond out of feelings to individuals that come against us. If God wants us to fight, He will lead us to do so, and His followers will know when. When we fight it should never be out of emotions, but only when we are called by God to do so. Thanks for reading God's Word. Love, Pastor Joe.
