17 These things I command you, that ye love one another. - John 15:17 (KJV)
Jesus made it so very clear, that we were to love one another, and again He commands us to love one another. He commanded us to love one another as He has loved us (John 15:12). Jesus said that the greatest of all the commandments was to love God with all our hearts, and love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). Jesus made it clear that all the law was fulfilled by these two commandments (Matthew 22:40). What an amazing thing it was for Jesus to take all the rules and regulations of the Old Testament Law, and sum them up in two commands of love – Wow!
This illustrates that all the things that were commanded for people to do under the law were just pictures of what love would have us do, if we would just love one another. So many Christians still don’t understand that under the New Testament Covenant that we have with God, we are not told we have to do works to be right with God, but we just have to love Him and others. The wonderful thing is that if you truly love God, and others, you will do all those things that were commanded under the law, but it will be done out of love, and not out of obligation. This takes all the pressure off of the Christian, if you understand this, and it does away with condemnation (Romans 8:1), which is the greatest tool that the devil uses against us. Praise God for making us a loving machine, instead of a doing machine.
