19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: - Matt 28:19 (KJV)
Notice that Jesus commanded us to go and teach all nations – not just evangelize them, and get them born again. Most translations use the word disciple for the Greek word translated “teach” in this verse. Jesus clearly taught that we should go and make disciples, and not just converts, as He said that to be His disciples indeed, we must stay in His word (John 8:31). The fact that the modern church tends to only get people saved, and not make them disciples, is one reason that we are not having the success of the early church, as they made disciples. Paul didn’t just start churches and then leave, but he stayed until he made them disciples, sometimes for many years. If people are truly disciples, then they have the ability to go and get others born again. All Christians should be disciples, and not just converts.
Jesus commanded that we baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and that is what we should do. The early church many times baptized in the name of Jesus only (Acts 2:38, 10:48, 19:5), but unless they have been instructed to receive the Holy Ghost they didn’t receive it (Acts 8:16). If you are baptized as Jesus instructed in this verse, then you will receive the Holy Ghost at the time you are baptized, otherwise you must ask for it separately. We just need to do as our Lord commands us to do, and not vary from it, as He had a reason to tell us what to do. Praise God for all His instructions.
