7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. - Romans 9:7-8 (KJV)
When God promised Abraham that His seed would be as numerous as the sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17), He was not talking about the physical descendants of Abraham’s, but the ones that would have the like faith. The Jews thought that they, being the physical descendants, were the promised seed. They entirely missed the fact that God was referring to the seed, singular (Galatians 3:16), who was Jesus, and was talking about the ones whose faith would be in that seed (Jesus). We, who are born again, are the promised seed of Abraham’s, and we are the one’s that have all the promises that God gave to Abraham – Praise God.
God had established the fact that the first born would be the one to inherit the blessings of their father, and Isaac was not the first born of Abraham. This shows that the Jews, physical descendants, of Abraham’s were not the chosen ones, but the son of promise, Isaac, was the one, further showing that it was not the physical descendants, but the ones who would have the faith that Abraham had. The Christians are the promised seed of Abraham, as we have Jesus living inside us (Galatians 4:6), making us a part of His body – the church. By placing your faith in Jesus, and getting born again, you inherit all the many promises that God made to Abraham – Wow. That is wonderful, and something that the Old Testament Jews had totally missed. Praise God for all His wonderful promises to us, His children.
