29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. - Romans 8:29-30 (KJV)
Some have tried to make a doctrine out of these verses, by saying that God predetermines everything that happens to us, and that is not so. God has the ability to know (foreknow) everything, and He does predestinate those that He foreknew would accept Jesus. Even though God can foreknow what we will do, He does not control us, as He has given us a freewill to choose for ourselves (Deuteronomy 30:19). The bible shows in several places that things happened that God did not foreknow would happen (Jeremiah 19:5 & 32:35), so this shows that God does not choose to use His foreknowledge to know everything that will come to pass. When God made man He gave us dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:27-28), so that He no longer controlled the earth, giving us the free will to rule over the earth.
The teaching that God controls all that happens to us, (Sovereignty of God), is just not true, as the bible shows that God does not control, or even foreknow, all that happens. Those of us that God did foreknow would accept Jesus, He has called, justified, and glorified, to conform to the image of Jesus. All who accept Jesus, and are born again, will become like Jesus when He comes again (1 John 3:1-2), as long as we don’t fall from grace (Galatians 5:4), or blasphemy the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31-32), or disobey Jesus (Hebrews 5:9). Thank you Lord for giving us a free will so that we can mess up our own lives, then forgiving us for doing so – Praise God.
