28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. - Romans 8:28 (KJV)

This verse is taken out of context and used to say that whatever happens will always work out for our good. That is not so, and many try to say that it is God that causes things to happen so it will work out for His good, and that is not so. This verse starts with the word “and”, linking it to the previous verses (26 & 27). When you take all those verses into account, you find that what this is saying is that when you are making intercession for another person, and you don’t know how to pray for them, the Holy Spirit will join with you with groaning that can’t be uttered, and then all things work together for good. Also it only works for those who love God and are called to His purpose, which is to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). Many times a Pastor will use only the first part of this verse (And we know that all things work together for good), to try to explain someone’s death or accident, but that is not right. The devil comes only to steal, kill and destroy us (John 10:10), and it is the devil that causes many tragedies, and not God. Jesus defeated the devil and cast him out of heaven (Revelation 12:9), and gave us power over the devil (James 4:7), and it is up to us to rebuke him and keep him from overcoming the saints. We can not just be passive about the devil, and use scriptures like this one to try and make things look okay, when they are not. The devil has been placed under the feet of the saints – so just stomp on his head whenever he comes around. Praise God for giving us this power.
