34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. - John 13:34-35 (KJV)

Jesus boiled the whole law down to this one thing, as following this command will fulfill the whole law (Romans 13:8). What a marvelous thing it was to take the whole law of doing, and fulfill it just by loving. This also was called the royal law (James 2:8), and what a tremendous way of fulfilling the law – just by loving others. Jesus also said this in other scriptures (Matthew 22:36-40), and it is the whole commandment of the New Covenant that we are now under. This truth about love was in the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:18 & Deuteronomy 6:4-5), but was overshadowed by all the rules and regulations given through Moses.

The way this world will know that we are the disciples of Jesus, is the love we have for each other. This is amazing, as Jesus didn’t say it would be because of our holiness, faithfulness, or any other characteristic, but it would be the love. The reason for this is that God is love (1 John 4:8), and so the love we show to others, is demonstrating that we have God in us. The way that a Christian knows that God is flowing through them, is when we feel the compassion and God’s kind of “AGAPE” love flow out of us toward someone. That is God wanting to minister to that person through us, and that is when we need to follow up and minister to that person, and that is when the Holy Spirit will release His gifts, and give us what we need to know to help that person. That is when a Christian will operate in the Gifts of the Spirit, like words of knowledge, prophecy, etc. Praise God for giving us His love, both to us, and through us.
