10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. - Matt 15:10-11 (KJV)
Jesus was rebuking the Pharisees in front of the people when He said this verse. He later explained this to His disciples when they didn’t understand what He meant (Matthew 17-20), and Jesus was saying that the words that we speak, come out of our hearts, and they are what defile a person, not the food that we put into our mouths. This is so true, and shows what is in our hearts, by the words we speak, for out of the heart come the issues of life (Proverbs 23:7).
The words we speak contain either life or death (Proverbs 18:21), and as Jesus told us, a person will be held accountable for every idle word that he speaks (Matthew 12:36-37). The majority of people do not place any importance on the words they speak, but God created this whole world by speaking it into existence with His words (Genesis 1), and He made us in His image. This places a tremendous power in our words, and they can cause tremendous good or evil (James 3:5-6). Our words are what let us who are born again, and have the Holy Ghost in them, be able to do the works that Jesus did, and commanded us to do (Matthew 14:12). God flows through His people by the words that they speak in accordance to His will, shown in the scriptures. Praise God for giving us the power to speak words.
