7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. - Matt 15:7-9 (KJV)

You know, Jesus was not “politically correct” the way the modern church acts, as He just told it like it was. These scribes and Pharisees were teaching that people could pay money to them instead of supporting their own parents, and that would be okay, and Jesus was rebuking them for such teachings. We Christians need to tell the truth of God’s Word (John 4:23) no matter how “politically incorrect” it is, but do so in love, not trying to be mean about it.

The prophesy that Jesus was referring to is Isaiah 29:13, and was true in this time period, as they did all the rituals required under the law, but their hearts were turned away from God. We must keep in mind that it is not what we do for the Lord, but how our heart is toward Him that matters. You can do lots for the Lord, and still have Him say He never knew you (Matthew 7:23), if you have not given Him your heart.

The modern church is guilty of trying to place a lot of man made rules upon the members, and that goes against the grace brought by Jesus. It is not what we do for the Lord that matters, but what He did for us. It is all about Jesus, and not about us. If you give yourself wholly to Him (Romans 12:1), you will want to live a holy life for Him, but you will do so out of love, not because you have to. Praise God for the grace and mercy He has shown toward us.
