43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. - John 11:43-44 (KJV)
What a tremendous miracle this was, as Lazarus had been dead for 4 days, and his body would have been decomposing, so this was more then just raising from the dead. If Jesus hadn’t used Lazarus’s name when He called him to come forth, it is possible that all the dead people would have come back to life, as that will happen when Jesus comes again (1 Thessalonians 4:16, Revelations 20:12-13). What marvelous power our God has, that can do miracles such as this, and there is nothing He can’t do (Matthew 19:26) – Wow!
The method of burying someone in those days, was to wrap their bodies in clothes with spices, and place them into caves, and that is how Jesus was buried (John 19:39-40). This resurrection of Lazarus is an illustration of our being born again, as we are raised from death to a new life (John 5:24, 1 John 3:14), but we are still bound in our grave clothes. We must renew our minds with the Word of God (Romans 12:2) to get out of the grave clothes we were bound with, and let Jesus live through us, so we can live our lives for Him. This is what Jesus is saying to each born again believer, is to “Loose him” so that we can start living our lives for God, and be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). Praise God for giving us the power of the Holy Ghost so that we can do the works that Jesus did (John 14:12). Let’s do it!
