39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order. - 1 Cor 14:39-40 (KJV)

The Corinthian Church was a very carnal group, and Paul was admonishing them to behave when they came together. Paul is telling them that they should seek to prophesy in the church meeting, as that would edify the whole body. They were coming together in church, and all of them speaking in tongues, without interpreting them, and it was just mass confusion. Speaking in tongues edifies the individual, but does not edify others, and should not be done in church, unless someone interprets it (1 Corinthians 14:5). Notice that this verse says to not forbid the speaking in tongues as many churches do. The Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) are still available until Jesus comes again (1 Corinthians 13:10-12), and the church should not teach otherwise.

All things in the church services should be done “decently and in order” as this verse says. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), but the devil is (James 3:16). When Christians gather to worship the Lord, it should always be in a spirit of love for one another (John 15:17), and the strife and bickering that we find in many churches should not be. If we love one another, as Jesus commanded us to do (John 13:34-35), we would not have the arguing in church, and the world would know we were His disciples. Let us love one another as Jesus loves us, and we will truly be Christians (little Christ’s). Praise God.
