12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. - 1 Cor 13:12-13 (KJV)
Paul had a better knowledge of the Kingdom of God than just about anyone, yet he still says that we only see through a glass darkly, meaning we can not see clearly what God’s Kingdom is like. Even though we, who have been born again, have the very mind of Christ in our new spirits (1 Corinthians 2:16), it can only be accessed partially as we renew our minds to the Word of God (Romans 12:2). When we see Jesus upon His return, we will at that time know everything that He knows, as we will be like Him. This is what the “face to face” is referring to, and shows that we will need the Gifts of the Spirit until Jesus returns, and they did not pass away with the Apostles as some teach.
This whole chapter of the bible has been contrasting God’s kind of love (charity) with the Gifts of the Spirit. The Spiritual Gifts will pass away when Jesus comes again, but God’s kind of love will never pass away (1 Corinthians 13:8). Faith, Hope and Charity will last forever, and not pass away. Charity (God’s kind of love) is the greatest of all the things mentioned, and that is because God is love (1 John 4:8). Charity is love in action, not just a feeling. It is the kind of love that you demonstrate by your actions, and not just words (James 1:23). That is why it is the God kind of love, as God proves His love by His actions, all the time. We need to show this kind of love to others (John 13:34), if we are to live the Christian life as God means us to. Praise God for His wonderful love to us, His children.
